New Year Gear | Samsung Unveils Really Flat TV

Is this the inevitable and perhaps final evolution on the trend toward larger, flatter flat-panel TVs? This one, soon to be produced by electronics giant Samsung, will be annouced this Wednesday in the run-up to the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The screen is between 6.5mm-7mm in depth, and uses an upgraded version of an older technology, backlit LED (light emitting diodes). No word yet on production dates or expected retail cost, but surely this will be the TV you want to hang on the wall to prevent small children and light breezes from knocking it over.

Government | National Assembly Gets Testy

When the times get tough, members of the National Assembly get tougher. Defenders of Kang Ki-kap, the stylishly populist and ultra-left leader of the Democratic Labor Party (민주노동당), might say he was merely trying to establish order by moving the retractable Tensabarrier. Supporters of the FTA in the leading pro-US Grand National Party, however, might say he was unfairly bringing his own gavel to session.

A Boozy Way to Make Galbi Healthier

It is a fact that a high-fat diet of grilled meats such as samgyeopsal and galbi along with consumption of alcohol increases the risk of stomach cancer, because cooking meats at high temperatures produces carcinogens called HA's (heterocyclic amines).
Photos | I Do Solemnly Swear to Deliver On Christmas…

In an annual rite of Christmas season cheer, the South Korea Postal Service dons their Santa outfits. In all practicality, these suits should help the mailmen stay warm while riding scooters in freezing temperatures.

Places | Cheonggyecheon Park Looking Festive

Start at City Hall station and walk toward the start point of the Cheonggyecheon Park. This is perhaps the only time of year when the Spiral unicorn-whatever that is much derided throughout the rest of the year actually fits with the Christmas theme. Imagine a babbling brook surrounded by festive lights, people walking about, and romance. With Gwanghwamun and Insadong right around the corner, this should not be missed!

Google Earth | Seoul in 2D Land, New York in Sim City

For those of you have tried Google Earth, you'll know that South Korea has for reasons of national security blotted out huge swaths of countryside. Luckily, you can see all of Seoul up to a certain resolution on their satellite view. We've also been eagerly anticipating Google Street View to come to Seoul but that's not entirely certain given Seoul's uncountable alley roads (golmok-gil, or 골목길 in Korean).
