Hagwons Setting Up Shop in Officetels

Korea Beat gives us the scoop on the rise of hagwons located inside officetel buildings. According a report by the Chosun, these non-traditional locations are distinct for their small size (in terms of pyeong the law dictates hagwons have to be over 100-pyeong). Imagine a one classroom hagwon located inside an 18-pyeong one-room officetel apartment and you get the idea.
On why these mostly illegal hagwons were increasing in popularity, one hagwon mom in Mokdong gave the lemming argument: ”For the past few years, kids have been going to these tutoring places, so I can’t leave out my kid.” And the coup de grace, “Besides, the crackdown against illegal hagwons [that run late into the evening] have left me few choices.”
The officetel, widely reported by the media for their role in dispersing the sex industry, is fast proving its worth as the place of choice for any industry running away from a crackdown. If the government cracks down on screen golf, expect to see… wait, they’re already in officetels.
