Microsoft Wants You to Bing Instead of Wave

Microsoft unveiled its new search engine Bing on Tuesday night in a promotional event at the Seattle Space Needle.  Bing is being billed as the next step forward in search.  Its ”decision engine” helps users filter out the clutter by collating information in a formatted form (as opposed to just listing links), and this, Microsoft believes, is going to help them take a larger share of the search market.

Los Angeles Times writer David Sarno writes:

“This more elegant and intuitive approach to search will help consumers distill useful information on commerce-friendly topics such as shopping, travel, health and local business, Microsoft said. … Its redoubled focus on commerce-related search is probably a reflection of the online advertising market, in which sellers pay more to put their ads in front of consumers who are already shopping.”

Google, on the other hand, is not shaking in its boots just yet.  They’ve been hard at work developing the “next Google” which they call Google Wave

David Berkowitz of Social Media Insider contrasts Bing and Google Wave this way:

“Bing is anti-social to the point that it lets you watch Hulu videos within the search results (it feels more like a search portal than a decision engine), but it doesn’t let you share the clips. Contrast this with Google Wave, which is all social.

That’s the simplest way to understand it: Wave makes everything social. It incorporates some elements of other social applications — Gmail, Google Talk, Blogger, collaborative functions of Google Docs — and blends them together to create live and time-shifted social experiences.”

So far, while the press is generally positive about Bing, many Google fans (which means just about everyone) are eagerly anticipating Wave.   Microsoft is moving fast, though, with one milestone already achieved.  They know their site has potential, is useful, or might become popular because China has just blocked it.
