American Daniel Libeskind, the master architect recognized for his selection as overseer for the rebuilding of the World Trade Center of lower Manhattan, has now been chosen to rebuild the Seoul Yongsan District after the U.S. Military base near there vacates sometime around 2012.

The estimated $20-billion project is slated to break ground in 2011 and be completed around 2016.  Besides a cluster of shiny new residential, commercial, and retail buildings (skyscrapers), the most anticipated feature will be a “Central Park-like attraction” over the former military grounds.  This could be the central greenspace the city has been waiting for quite a long time.

This is not his firm’s only project in South Korea (see Studio Daniel Libeskind), as there are also designs for five waterfront towers in Busan and multiple commercial properties for New Songdo City, Incheon.  This makes it look certain that Libeskind will be making his mark in the decades ahead on Korea’s skylines.
