Seoul Moving Towards Being Smoke-Free

You may have started to notice it in subtle ways at restaurants and cafes, as the Seoul Metropolitan Government takes aggressive steps to curb second-hand smoke.   Smoking bans now include public outdoor areas such as streets and plazas.   While no fines or penalties are associated with these new rules, which works through designating smoke-free zones, it looks as though the government aims to make it socially unacceptable to be a smoker in public.

Smokers in Seoul will have fewer places to smoke, as the city is moving to designate parks and all other public places as nonsmoking areas.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Monday that it plans to assign outdoor public places including plazas, streets and schools, as nonsmoking areas and will issue related regulations soon.
