Hagwon Spending Curbs “Massive Pile of FAIL”
A recent study by the Ministry of Education & Technology says the government’s attempts at curbing hagwon spending (which tops $30-billion by the way) are not working. Parents still spend as much as they can so that their children are afforded the very best (if not the most) English education for their futures.
Excerpt from Korea Beat:
A study has found that the Ministry of Education and Technology’s attempt to reduce the burden on parents of private education spending by intensifying English education in public elementary schools has achieved almost no results.
On the 3rd the Hankyoreh reported that of the 16 schools nationwide chosen for the Ministry’s experiment in intensifying English lessons in the third through sixth grades, six have reported that most parents have not reduced spending on private education and have no plans to do so.
Such is the free market, eh? It’s like telling Americans to stop buying SUVs because the economy and environment have tanked. Falling on deaf ears.

I googled “what $30-billion can buy” and it looks like you can buy Yahoo for that amount, or at least make a bid.
But in actuality, the $30-billion is for the total spent on private ed, while $15-billion is the amount spent on private english education (but then again that figure would probably jump if you count in the tutoring fees).
Experts said that Koreans spend an estimated 30 trillion won on private education per year. About 15 trillion won is spent for private English lessons annually.
