Online Blotter | Maple Story Murder

A woman in Japan is under arrest Friday after she offed her virtual husband in the popular South Korean online role-playing game Maple Story.

The drama begins with a 43-year old Tokyo woman who became miffed after finding out she had been divorced by her virtual husband without warning.   She did what many women scorned in the real world might have done.   She went snooping with her virtual husband’s passwords.   She is alleged to have taken her online husband’s password and ‘killed’ off his identity.

She was taken in by authorities for questioning related to suspicion of attempted hacking.  No murder charges are pending, except maybe, in the town of Amoria.

Excerpt here:

“She has not yet been formally charged, but if convicted could face a prison term of up to five years or a fine up to $5,000.

Players in “Maple Story” raise and manipulate digital images called “avatars” that represent themselves, while engaging in relationships, social activities and fighting against monsters and other obstacles.

The woman used login information she got from the 33-year-old office worker when their characters were happily married, and killed the character. The man complained to police when he discovered that his beloved online avatar was dead.”
